The US presented allies with proposals to enable a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, including an outline of terms to end the fighting and ease sanctions on Moscow in the event of a lasting ceasefire, Americandiary24 reports, citing Bloomberg.
The proposal package was discussed on April 17 during talks between US negotiator Steve Witkoff and French President Emmanuel Macron. Additionally, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reviewed the plan with his security advisors. Sources in the European Union (EU) revealed that according to Washington’s proposal, the conflict would be frozen for one year, and the situation around Ukrainian territories currently controlled by Russia would remain unchanged.
The proposal also includes removing the issue of Ukraine’s NATO membership from the agenda.
Regarding the return of Russian assets to the country, EU members have not yet reached a common stance, as a unified position is required. The plan also places certain obligations on Russia, one of which involves Moscow agreeing to halt military operations.
The plan stipulates that Ukraine must be given security guarantees for its implementation.
The push comes even as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested on Friday that the Trump administration is prepared to “move on” from its peace efforts unless progress is made quickly. US Vice President JD Vance, though, said in Rome on Friday he was “optimistic” about the chances of bringing the war to a close.
