U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng engaged in a frank policy discussion on Friday, addressing key economic and security concerns during an introductory video call, according to statements from both governments.
Bessent urged Beijing to strengthen efforts against fentanyl trafficking and take steps to rebalance its economy, while He voiced concerns over President Donald Trump's newly imposed tariffs and ongoing trade restrictions.
Despite their differences, both officials agreed on the need to maintain open lines of communication. In its readout, the U.S. Treasury highlighted Bessent’s emphasis on the Administration's commitment to safeguarding American workers, the economy, and national security, while expressing serious concerns about China’s counternarcotics efforts and perceived economic imbalances.
Chinese state media echoed the significance of the dialogue, noting He's concerns over U.S. tariffs and trade barriers. The discussion was described as an “in-depth” exchange on critical issues impacting China-U.S. economic relations, with both sides recognizing the importance of continued engagement on matters of mutual interest.
As lead negotiators for their respective countries, Bessent and He underscored the value of bilateral trade ties and agreed to keep communication channels open amid growing economic tensions.
